VNUA141 is the first anthocyanin-rich single-cross hybrid purple waxy corn variety bred in Vietnam, developed by the Institute of Crop Research and Development, Vietnam National University of Agriculture. Fertilizer level and planting density are very important information in the commercial cultivation method of VNUA141 variety. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of nitrogen fertilizer and planting density on the yield and quality of hybrid purple waxy com VNUA141. The experiment was designed in a split-plot with three replications in winter 2019 and spring 2020 season at Gia Lam, Hanoi. The results show that, days to harvesting shorter around 2-3 days when planting with low density (M1, M2: 48,000-51,000 plants/ha) in comparison with high density (M3, M4: 57,000-62,000 plants/ha). Increasing planting density significantly increased the leaf area index (LAI) of VNUA141 in the winter season 2019, but there was a slightly significant difference in the spring season 2020. The harvest index (HI) increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer from Pl to P3 and then decreased at P4. Increasing the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied significantly reduces nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). HI and NUE reached the highest at M2 planting density and then gradually decreased when increasing to M3 and M4 density levels. HI and NUE have a positive and strong correlation at a statistically significant level with marketable yield (r2 = 0,80*** và r2 = 0,66*** tương ưng trong vụ đông 2019; r2 = 0,53* và r2 = 0,30*, respectively in spring season 2020). High nitrogen application (P4) reduced marketable yield and it might be due to the decrease of both HI and NUE. Anthocyanin content in winter season 2019 is slightly higher than spring season 2020, but no significant difference between treatments. Stability and adaptation analysis by AMMI model in both seasons showed that the combination of N fertilizer P3 (160N:90P2O5:90K2Okg/ha) and density M2 (70 X 28 cm) is an optimum for the commercial cultivation method of VNUA141. This is the first study on the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and plant density on the first purple waxy corn variety of Vietnam.
