High strength sugary wastewater was continuously treated in a lab-scale VASB reactor operated at 37oC for 440 days. Optimal values of various operational parameters such as nutritional ratio in the wastewater; concentration of volatitle faty acids (VFAs); pH; hydraulic retention time; and organic loading rates were investigated and recommended in order to achieve a high treatment efficiencies. Biogas and excess sludge arisen from treatment process were investigated in both quality and quantity. The microbial structure of the granular sludge was elucidated.
