Severe dengue hemorrhagic fever is very dangerous, easy to cause death in children and increases the economic burden for families. Objectives: (1) To survey the characteristics of severe dengue patients in Dong Nai Children's Hospital in 2022; (2) To description of the direct medical costs related to severe dengue at Dong Nai Children's Hospital in 2022. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis was conducted on 400 inpatient medical records of patients diagnosed with severe dengue at Dong Nai Children's Hospital from January 1st, 2022 to December 30th, 2022. Results: Severe dengue was mainly in the group of children aged 10 years and older (70%); the majority reside in Dong Nai (93.8%), male patients were higher than female patients (61.3% and 38.2%). The main hospital stay < 7 days accounted for 79.0%; 0.8% hospital stay ≥ 15 days. The median direct cost of dengue-related health care was 3,503,722 VND, of which three-quarters of the cost was in the range of 2,181,412 VND to 5,279,311 VND. The median direct medical expenses covered by health insurance related to dengue fever was 3,780.429 VND. The median direct medical expenses paid by patients related to dengue fever is 1,888,202 VND. Conclusion: The cost of treatment for severe dengue is not high due to the support from health insurance. Hospital reviewed the procurement of medical supplies to create favorable conditions in paying for health insurance costs for patients, limiting out-of-pocket costs for patients.
